Image Basics

What is a pixel?  What is a bit mapped image and why is it called that? In your own words, tell what the following format file extensions are and what their advantages and disadvantages are:

Image Scanning

Scan an image into the computer and save as BMP with at least 16 bit color depth. Open it in LView Pro and save as a JPG using a compression quality of 20, then reopen the original BMP and save it as a GIF. For each, image, check the file size and then use the command in LViewPro to count the number of colors. Look at each image and decide what its quality is, then fill out the table.

Change the color depth of the three images above to 256 colors and 16 colors. Explain what differences you see in the images when you change the color depth and how the numbers of colors changes.

Usually, only 256 colors are used for displaying graphics on the web. Work with your image to get to small file size with only 256 colors that still looks good in a web browser. Link it here.

Image Manipulation

  2. Resize your image so that it has only half as many pixels on a side and link it here.
