Multimedia Imaging Quiz 1
Please save all files on a floppy and return on Monday,
September 27. Some of the questions require a written response. For these,
answer them in a Microsoft Word document with the answers written in complete
sentences in such a way that we don’t need to know the question. However, they must
still be numbered according to the questions. Spelling, grammar, and formatting
all count. For your image files, use names that clearly indicate which question
they are for. The work is to be yours, but you may use help files, Internet,
your class notes and the pictures you have worked on to get answers to your
questions. If you need to use a computer after school on Friday, arrange time
with me ASAP. (Note that the late bus leaves at 5:15 on that day).
- What
is a pixel?
- Why is
the base two numbering system important in computer graphics work?
- What
is a bit mapped image? Why is it called that?
- In
your own words, tell what the following format file extensions are and
what their advantages and disadvantages are:
- GIF
- JPG
- BMP
- You
have scanned at least two images into the computer.
- Using
a 16 or 24 bit color depth, save one image in BMP, GIF, and JPG.
i.
Count the number of colors (use LView Pro)
ii.
Tell the difference in file sizes.
- Change
the color depth of the three images above to 256 colors and 16 colors.
Explain what differences you see in the images when you change the color
depth and how the number of colors change.
- Usually,
only 256 colors are used for displaying graphics on the web. Work with
your image to get to small file size with only 256 colors that still
looks good in a web browser. Save the file and tell what you did.
- Clone
a portion of one of your scanned images onto the other and save as a
separate file.
- Resize
your image so that it has only half as many pixels on a side and save it.
- Do
something with an image you haven’t done before and save the file.
Explain what you did and tell whether you liked it or not.
- Bonus
questions:
- What
is a vector graphics image?
- Use
a portion of one of your scanned images to create an icon. (Remember, an
icon is a 32x32 BMP image with the file extension changed to ICO.)
