Each of you will have an AIM account overseen by the school. You must:

  • Use the account responsibly and only for chat related to the class.
  • Not change the password.
  • Save a file of each chat and upload it for me. The file name you will use is the name of your AIM account.

Most of you have used chat before. Then, you were doing it with your friends. Now, you are ready to move to the point where you will be collaborating with others over chat. In short, you will be engaged in professional discourse.

Professional discourse requires a different type of conversation and technique than with your friends. You need to use correct grammar, syntax, spelling, and capitalization. Do not use abbreviations for common words, but you may use abbreviations for concepts you frequently.

Examples

Instead of:
  • what r u doin now
  • !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!??????????!!!!!!
  • i want 2 get 1 2
Use:
  • What are you doing now?
  • ?
  • I want to get one too.
Abbreviations:
  • Use FP for "FrontPage"
  • DW for "Dream Weaver"
  • IE for "Internet Explorer"

Note that abbreviations are capitalized and used for common expressions where it won't be mistaken.

It's not complex, but it does require that you think about what you are doing and writing. Save your chats in a log file for me.
