Opening Web Folders

One of the more powerful features of working off of the server is the concept of "web folders". Basically, these are locations on the web that work a lot like regular folders. If you double-click your "My Computer" icon, you should see the "Web Folders" icon as one of the listings as shown in Figure 1.

Once you create a web folder, you can double-click the "Web Folders" icon in My Computer and drag and drop things into your web. (I don't recommend this as a method of posting, but it does make it easy to add pages you want to link up when you open FrontPage.) You may create the web folder by selecting "Add New Web Folder" after double clicking the "Web Folders" icon in "My Computer".

The preferred method is to open your pages on the server and create your web folder at the same time.

  • Start FrontPage 2000
  • Select File==>Open Web...
  • Select the "Web Folder" icon on the bottom right of the window.

Figure 2. Adding Web Folder in Front Page

  • Click on the new folder button.
  • Put in the URL for your web site without any file names and click next. See Figure 3.

Figure 2. Enter the URL of your web site.

  • Enter your username and password when it asks.
  • Enter the name you want so that you can recognize the folder and click Finish. See Figure 4.

Figure 4. Enter the name for the web folder.

  • Click Open.

You are now working directly on the server. As soon as you save a change, people can see it. The next time you want to open the web on the same computer, when you select File==>Open Web... then the "Web Folder" icon, you will see your site listed.
