Overview

Explorations II is designed to help you achieve the ASIJ Student Learning Outcomes. Everything you do in the class should help you meet at least one of those outcomes. Your Digital Learning Experience is the focus of your time in the course and it will help you continue to stretch yourself and your learning. It will be uncomfortable at times, but it will also help you move into new areas.

Requirements

You will plan, do, and document three major experiences for the semester:

  1. Animate something--Create a quality animation using Poser, Squeak, Flash, or another package. The animation must tell a story with a definite beginning, middle, and end. The animation must be able to play without the program but it's acceptable to require a plug-in. Your documentation and reflections will tell why you chose the package and what you learned.
  2. Program something--Create a useful program using a Logo, Squeak, Java, Javascript, Visual Basic, Visual Basic for Applications, Alice, or another programming package. The program must have a useful, coherent purpose. Your documentation will include an explanation of how your program works, why you chose the purpose, and what you learned.
  3. Understand something--Explore something about technology in more depth and with a focus and it might be an extension of your animation or program. Your documentation and reflections will include why you chose your project and what you learned.

As part of the Digital Learning Experience, you must also:

  1. Plan your learning--Write a short plan for each experience before you start it, including what you hope to learn. With the animation, create a short storyboard and scan it for your portfolio.
  2. Reflect on your learning--For each experience, reflect on your learning and experiences. Use the Tri-Class reflections for periodic reflections, and have a summative reflection for each experience. In particular, look back at your plan and what you achieved, and explain any difference.
  3. Use something you learned in another class.
  4. Teach someone.
  5. Display your experience.

This assignment may be revised to clarify concepts and ideas.

Portfolio Design and Location

The portfolio is a showcase portfolio, which means it will showcase your best work and have a professional appearance. Full requirements for the technical aspects of the portfolio are available here.

You will develop your web in the appropriate subweb under http://discussion.asij.ac.jp/ms/class/exp/s03. The procedure below will allow you to open your web from your home page as well.

In FrontPage,

  • go to File==>Open Web,
  • select Web Folders or My Network Places,
  • create a new folder,
  • If asked, select the button for an existing network place
  • then put in http://discussion.asij.ac.jp/ms/class/exp/s03 as the location.

Publish your portfolio to your site on our student web server in the dp sub web. The URL is http://student.asij.ac.jp/username/dp. Don't forget to replace username with your actual username when you publish. Your home page filename must be named index.htm. Location of your portfolio is critical! If it is not at this exact address you will receive a zero since it will look like no attempt was made.

Periodically during development, peers will assess your portfolio and you will show portions to your parents.

  • Complete with clear, coherent reflections
  • Has all contents of the portfolio
  • Shows understanding of the technology concepts and procedures
  • Satisfies all essential conditions of the Digital Learning Experience and goes beyond what is asked for in some unique way.
  • Portfolio is suitable for the student to use to convince others of ability to learn and use technology at an advanced level.

4    Complete Response

  • Complete with clear, coherent reflections
  • Has all contents of the portfolio
  • Shows understanding of the technology concepts and procedures
  • Satisfies all essential conditions of the Digital Learning Experience
  • Portfolio is suitable for the student to use to convince others of ability to learn and use technology at a highly advanced level for middle school students.

3    Reasonably Complete Response

  • Reasonably complete; may lack detail in some reflections
  • Has most contents of the portfolio (missing a maximum of two of the required documents.)
  • Shows understanding of most of the technology concepts and procedures address
  • Satisfies most of the essential conditions of the Digital Learning Experience
  • Portfolio is suitable for the student to use to convince others of ability to learn and use technology at an advanced level for middle school students.

2    Partial Response

  • Reflections may be unclear or lack detail
  • Has a minimum of half the contents of the portfolio
  • Shows some understanding of the technology concepts and procedures
  • Satisfies some essential conditions of the Digital Learning Experience
  • Portfolio, after modification, would be suitable for the student to use to convince others of ability to learn and use technology at a middle school level.

1    Inadequate Response

  • Incomplete; Reflections are insufficient or not understandable
  • Has few of the required contents of the portfolio
  • Shows little understanding of the technology concepts and procedures
  • Fails to address essential conditions of theDigital Learning Experience
  • Portfolio is not suitable for student to use to convince others of ability to learn and use technology at a middle school level.

0    No Attempt

  • No reflections
  • Does not attempt portfolio
  • Does not address conditions of the portfolio
